Why would such advanced dental practitioners offer general dentistry?

Many of our patients ask for general dentistry services because they have certain conditions and dental needs which neighborhood general dentists are unable to provide including:

  • Temporomandibular Disorders (TMJ). Patients with TMJ often need to take short breaks to relax their mouths and jaw when having cleaning and other routine dental work done. At Bethesda TMJ our practitioners are sensitive to these issues and make sure to schedule longer appointment times for patients who need these breaks. We also use special equipment that allows us to work in the patients' mouth without the need to open very wide the entire time.

  • Patients preparing for cancer treatment. Patients preparing for cancer treatment are instructed by their doctors to have a comprehensive dental evaluation. They can have no impacted teeth or teeth that need to be extracted or treated. All of their oral health needs to be taken care of in a specific way. Our practitioners can make a mold of their mouth before treatment so reconstruction can be as exact as possible after treatment.

  • Patients recovering from cancer or trauma. After patients have extensive reconstruction work done on their mouth and jaws they may feel hesitant going to a neighborhood general dentist. Our doctors have a unique understanding of anatomy after reconstruction and make sure that routine dental work is done gently and with sensitivity. We have special expertise to treat post radiation patients and other cancer treatments. For example many cancer patients find they have dry mouth and develop a different kind of tooth decay in different area and their needs to be approached very specifically.

  • Patients with unexplained facial pain or trigeminal neuralgia. Some patients have such sensitive neck and facial pain issues a routine cleaning can become a traumatic event. Our doctors and staff have unique training to understand and administer routine dental care even to those patients with extreme sensitivity to touch and sensation in their mouth and faces.
